To enter into the NMI register as a mediator, one has to fulfill two basic requirements:
NMI has accredited several mediation training institutes . Their training programmes vary from a six day (plus evenings) basic course to schedules of twenty days or more. Successful completion of one of these trainings is one of the two preliminary conditions for admission to the NMI Register of Mediators.
The second preliminary condition for admission to the NMI-Register is to pass a test assessing relevant knowledge. The assessment instrument has been developed for NMI by the Leiden University, the Netherlands. It contains fourty multiple choice questions, as well as five open questions. The relevant knowledge is embodied in the Dutch "Mediation Handboek" (ed. Sdu Uitgevers, The Hague, the Netherlands).
